Welcome!

Can’t decide between Cancun or Cabo when planning your destination wedding? Honestly, I wouldn’t say that one destination is better than the other. They both offer very different experiences, so the right choice truly comes down to what you want to do and what kind of scenery you want for your wedding day.

I’ve spent years as a destination wedding travel agent researching and visiting resorts throughout Mexico, so when my couples ask me about Cabo vs. Cancun wedding options, I always ask them what they want their destination wedding to look like and what they want to do.

The Biggest Difference Between Cancun or Cabo

In the simplest of terms, Cancun is very tropical, while Cabo is more of a desert.

Cancun sits on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, while Los Cabos is situated at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, where the desert meets the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez. That difference alone can make the biggest difference to your wedding.

If you’ve been imagining white sand, turquoise water, palm trees and just that classic tropical beach vibe, Cancun may be your dream location. But if you love huge rock formations, desert landscapes, ocean views and a more Baja-inspired vibe, Cabo may be the best option.

So if you’re asking yourself, “is Cabo or Cancun better?”, start with the landscape of each location.

Destination Weddings in Cancun

Something you should know about a Cancun destination wedding is that it’s a big resort destination with plenty of some of the best all-inclusive wedding resorts, restaurants and entertainment. It’s also a great option if your guests want to explore more than the resort, with access to the wider Yucatan Peninsula and its Maya sites, hiking trails and other attractions.

If you want to prioritize swimming in the ocean, Cancun has the advantage over Cabo. That’s not to say that every beach in Cancun will have perfectly calm water every day. But generally speaking, your guests can spend a lot of time in the beautiful Caribbean water compared to Cabo.

Cancun is also very well known for its destination wedding resorts. You’ll find plenty of large resorts that cater to weddings and group travel, which can make it a great option if you’ll have a lot of friends and family attending.

The trade-off to that, is that Cancun can feel very touristy. This location is built around tourism and entertainment. For some couples, that’s a plus, and for others, they might want something quieter or more local feeling.

Destination Weddings in Cabo

Cabo offers a very different landscape. Los Cabos combines the desert with the ocean. So instead of the lush tropical landscape you’ll find in Cancun, you’re getting a more rugged, golden sand, large rock formation and Baja feeling landscape.

Cabo also has a very different vibe compared to Cancun. This location is known for its luxury resorts, golf, sportfishing, sailing, dining and the marina scene. San Jose del Cabo offers another aesthetic to Cabo with a historic downtown area, restaurants and more of a cultural atmosphere.

So, if you’ve been dreaming of planning a destination wedding surrounded by dramatic landscape and a more relaxed vibe, Cabo might be the best option for you.

There is one important thing to know before you book your Cabo destination wedding though…

What To Know About Cabo’s Oceans

This is a big deciding factor for many couples when they’re comparing their Cabo vs. Cancun wedding options. Not every beach is Los Cabos is safe for swimming. Some beaches experience strong rip currents or undertows, and you’ll be advised to use designated swimmable beaches.

That doesn’t mean you can’t swim at all in Cabo. It just means you’ll have to find a resort that has a swimmable beach and pay attention to whether it’s safe to swim that day or not.

Cancun or Cabo: Which Has More to do?

Both locations have plenty of activities to keep your guests busy. The question is, what kind of activities will your guests be into?

Cancun is a great option for couples who want easy access to the beach, nightlife, and excursions throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Guests can use Cancun as a starting point for exploring Mayan sites, cenotes and other attractions in the area.

Cabo has its own set of unique experiences, including sailing, snorkeling, diving, golf, sportsfishing, and exploring the coastline. El Arco is a very popular destination, while Cabo Pulmo offers a very different experience for guests who may be interested in exploring a protected marine environment.

If your guests want more of an authentic Mexican town experience, San Jose del Cabo has galleries and a unique downtown atmosphere that is a little different from the energy of Cabo San Lucas.

Cancun or Cabo: Weather and Aesthetic

Just like the landscape, the weather is another big difference between these two locations. Cancun has that warm, tropical Caribbean climate, while Los Cabos has a much drier desert climate. If humidity isn’t your favorite thing in the world, then the dry Baja climate might be the better option. If you want lush tropical landscape and that Caribbean beach vibe, Cancun might align better with your vision.

This is another great reason why you should work with a trusted travel agent who has personally visited these locations. I can tell you from first hand experience what the weather is like and how it might impact your wedding experience.

Is Cabo Or Cancun Better For Your Guests?

I highly encourage you to think about your destination wedding from your guests point of view. You’re not choosing a destination location for your wedding ceremony, you’re choosing a place where your friends and family will spend several days celebrating this momentous occasion with you.

Think about the wedding from your guest point of view. How long will the flight be for them? One location might only be a 2 hour flight while the other is closer to 4. Will they want to swim in the beach? Or are they more interested in the rock formations of Cabo? Who will be bringing children? Will the resort have activities for kids of all ages?

These questions can really help you decide on if Cancun or Cabo is better for your destination wedding.

So, Is Cabo Or Cancun Better?

I don’t think there’s one perfect answer to this question.

If you want a tropical Caribbean setting, with plenty of time in the ocean, the convenience of all-inclusive resorts and all the attractions, Cancun might be your best bet.

But if you love desert scenery, large rock formations, luxury resorts, and sports, you might prefer Cabo over Cancun.

Is Cancun or Cabo better for a destination wedding?

Neither destination is universally better. Cancun may be a better fit for couples who want tropical beaches, calm Caribbean water, large all-inclusive resorts, and easy access to activities like cenotes and Mayan ruins. Cabo may appeal more to couples who prefer desert scenery, dramatic coastal landscapes, luxury resorts, golf, sailing, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Is Cabo or Cancun better for swimming in the ocean?

Cancun is generally the better choice if swimming in the ocean is important to you. Cancun’s Caribbean beaches typically have calmer, warmer water, while strong rip currents can make ocean swimming unsafe in many areas of Cabo. Designated swimming areas such as Medano Beach are an option in Cabo.

What is the biggest difference between a Cabo vs. Cancun wedding?

The scenery and overall destination feel are two of the biggest differences. Cancun offers a tropical Caribbean setting with white sand and turquoise water, while Cabo combines a desert landscape with dramatic rock formations and the Pacific Ocean. Your preferred scenery, activities, resort style, and guest experience can help determine which destination makes more sense for your wedding.

Are Cancun and Cabo both good options for an all-inclusive destination wedding?

Yes. Both destinations have all-inclusive resorts that host destination weddings. However, the resort experience can vary significantly, so I recommend choosing the destination and then narrowing down resorts based on the amenities, rooms, restaurants, beach, wedding venues, and overall experience you want for yourself and your guests.

Can my guests do more than attend the wedding in Cancun or Cabo?

Absolutely. Cancun offers access to activities such as cenotes, Mayan ruins, and jungle eco-parks, while Cabo is known for experiences such as sunset sailing, golf, sportfishing, and exploring the Baja California Sur region. The right choice depends on what you want your guests to experience outside of the wedding itself.
