If you’ve been googling everything you need to know about a Cancun destination wedding, you’ve probably realized there’s a lot more to consider than just picking a beautiful beach. You’ve probably seen things like the ceremony type, resort, guest travel, timing, wedding packages, budget, and so many other things that can quickly become overwhelming. Wanna know something? You do not have to figure it all out by yourself.

Cancun is one of the most popular locations for a destination wedding. But before you start scrolling through hundreds of resort photos, there are a few tips I have for planning a Cancun destination wedding.
Choose Your Ceremony Type
One of the first things you’ll need to decide is whether or not you want a legal ceremony or a symbolic ceremony.
A symbolic ceremony is typically more simple. It gives couples the experience of getting married in Cancun without needing to navigate the legal requirements of a Mexican civil marriage. You can get married legally in the states and then have your actual wedding ceremony in Mexico.
If you want your marriage legally recognized in Mexico, there’s a lot more requirements. Civil marriages in Mexico are handled through the local Civil Registry, and requirements can vary by state and municipality. Because of that, I recommend working directly with your resort’s wedding coordinator and your travel agent to understand the current requirements for your specific wedding.
Keep in mind that requirements can change. As one of the best all-inclusive travel agents, I don’t recommend relying on a Pinterest checklist or anything else you might find online. You’ll want the most current information, which you can find on the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico website or through your travel agent.
Choose your Cancun Destination Wedding Resort
There are so many beautiful Cancun wedding destination resorts, but they all have their differences. One resort might be perfect for a couple who wants a quiet, adults-only celebration, while another may be a better fit for couples who are bringing children, a larger group, or guests with varying budgets.
If you’re anything like me, you want to know what the beach looks like, the vibe of the wedding venue, how the food is, where the guests will stay, how the resort handles weddings, and what the overall experience is like.
I’ve personally visited more than 200 resorts, including many wedding properties in Cancun. I can help you narrow down your list based on your priorities and what I’ve experienced firsthand.
When you’re comparing destination wedding packages in Cancun, don’t just look at the starting price. Look at what’s included, how many guests are included, what additional events cost, what outside vendor policies apply, and what your guests will experience during their stay.
When To Plan Your Cancun Destination Wedding
For a Cancun destination wedding, I recommend giving yourself plenty of time to plan. Especially if you have your heart set on a particular wedding resort or particular wedding date.
Late November to April is a really popular time for a destination wedding in Cancun because it’s usually the dry season. If you’re hoping for a date within this popular time I recommend planning 18 months in advance, if possible.
May through September can definitely be warmer, but I wouldn’t rule out these months entirely. You can often work around the heat by planning your ceremony in the evening.
September to November is known as hurricane season, so if you’re planning a destination wedding in Mexico during these months I highly recommend a solid weather contingency plan. Your resort’s wedding team can help you with backup options and what to do if weather is affecting your event.
The important thing to note is that there isn’t one universal “best” month. Your ideal wedding date depends on your priorities, budget, guest availability, and how comfortable you are with contingency plans.
Important Details for Guests
A destination wedding isn’t just about getting you and your significant other to Cancun. You have a whole group of people traveling too and you want to take their experience into consideration as well.
Most resorts require your guests to stay a minimum number of nights, and some require a specific percentage of your wedding guests to book accommodations at the resort. Some properties may charge a day pass for your guests staying at another resort.
I recommend nailing down your guest list early on. If you’re planning a 3 night stay you could make day 1 a day for traveling and getting settled. Day 2 can be your rehearsal dinner and welcome event. And then day 3 is the wedding. Any guests who want to extend their vacation can stay longer and enjoy more time at the resort.
I also recommend sending your save-the-dates about 14 months before the travel date. That gives your guests plenty of time to make travel arrangements, request time off, and budget for the trip.
What is the Cost of a Destination Wedding in Cancun?
How much does a Mexico destination wedding cost? Well, the cost of a destination wedding in Cancun varies depending on the number of guests, resort, wedding package, vendors, and decor.
As a starting point, I would estimate that an average Cancun destination wedding costs around $15,000, while a more luxurious wedding can easily reach $30,000 or more.
That doesn’t mean that your wedding needs to cost that much. You have control over how much you spend and what you spend it on.
For example, using what the resort already has can help you avoid spending heavily on decorations. Cancun is already full of beautiful beaches, palm trees, and ocean views. You don’t need to transform your venues to make it beautiful.
The number of guests you invite is also a big factor in your overall destination wedding budget. The more people you invite, the more you’ll need to consider for accommodations, food, drinks, and other logistics.
Instead of asking, “What is the cost of a destination wedding in Cancun?” I prefer to ask yourself what you want your wedding to look like and who do you want to be there. From there you can create a realistic budget.
Consider the Resort’s Wedding Requirements
Something a lot of couples don’t always realize is that when they first start researching destination weddings in Cancun the resort’s wedding requirements matter just as much as the wedding package.
Some wedding resorts require a minimum stay, and many have requirements regarding how many guests need to stay on the property. If your guests book their stay somewhere else, they may need to pay for a day pass to go to your wedding.
I always encourage couples to reach out to me if they ever have any questions about their wedding resort for this very reason.
A wedding package that looks like a great deal at first look may not be the best value once you factor in the resort requirements.
